In the first quarter of 2024, Wi-Fi 7 access points barely registered in enterprise networking budgets — less than 1% of dependent access point revenue, according to IDC's tracking. By the first quarter of 2026, that figure had climbed to 44.5%. That's one of the fastest standard-to-mainstream transitions IDC has tracked in enterprise wireless, and it's happening for a specific reason: AI-assisted collaboration tools, high-density video, and real-time location tracking all lean on the kind of throughput and latency that Wi-Fi 6 and 6E can't reliably deliver once a network gets crowded.

The technical driver is Multi-Link Operation, which lets a single device use the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands simultaneously instead of picking one and sticking with it. Combined with wider 320MHz channels, it's a real fix for a specific problem that shows up in busy offices — not raw top speed, but consistency when forty people are on a call at the same time.

None of that means every business needs to upgrade this quarter. If your current network handles daily load without visible congestion — video calls not stuttering, file transfers not crawling during peak hours — Wi-Fi 7's advantages mostly go unused. Device support is still catching up too; plenty of laptops and phones in active use today don't have Wi-Fi 7 radios, so a network upgrade without a device refresh only helps the newest hardware in the building.

Where it's worth planning for regardless: if your last wireless refresh predates Wi-Fi 6E, or you're already budgeting new access points for capacity reasons, buying Wi-Fi 6 hardware today means buying into a standard the market has already started moving past. The upgrade doesn't need to be urgent to be worth specifying correctly.
